Celtics Reward Rivers With Extension

POSTED: 11:09 am EDT September 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - The NBA champion Boston Celtics have rewarded head coach Doc Rivers with a contract extension.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports indicated it to be a two- year extension through the 2010-11 campaign for Rivers, who led the Celtics to their 17th NBA title last season.

"We are pleased to be able to extend Doc's contract," said Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge. "Doc molded a championship team last season through his leadership and we are confident that he is the man to lead this franchise on the court now and in the future."

Rivers has amassed a record of just 168-160 in his four years with the Celtics, including a league-best mark of 66-16 in 2007-08. The team made the biggest turnaround in NBA history last year, as the additions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen helped the Celtics go from 24 wins to 66.

Boston captured its first NBA title since 1986 with a six-game triumph in the finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
