NFL Game Summary - Arizona At Philadelphia

POSTED: 3:00 am EST November 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Brian Westbrook scored four touchdowns -- two on the ground and two through the air -- and Donovan McNabb threw four touchdown passes as Philadelphia thumped the Arizona Cardinals, 48-20, as the Eagles played host on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1940.

Westbrook tied a franchise record with the scoring barrage after having been labeled questionable with nagging ankle and knee ailments prior to Thursday. The Villanova product rushed for 110 yards on 22 carries and hauled in three passes for 20 yards.

The recently much maligned McNabb was crisp in hitting on 27-of-39 pass attempts for 260 yards without an interception for the Eagles (6-5-1), who successfully staved off -- at least for one more week -- a brewing storm of turmoil that has built momentum for several weeks as the club's poor play resulted in an 0-2-1 showing in its last three games.

"I knew coming into this game if I just continue to be myself and know what I'm seeing out there and react -- good things would happen," McNabb said. "You just kind of pick plays and get into a rhythm. We put 48 points on the board when pretty much everyone counted us out. We've got a lot more games to go. We've got a lot more improvement but this is a start."

Two weeks ago, a 13-13 tie against one-win Cincinnati was followed by six days of conversation about McNabb and his ignorance toward the NFL's overtime rules.

Then this past Sunday, McNabb played poorly in the first half at Baltimore, and was surprisingly benched at halftime of a 10-7 game in favor of second- year-pro Kevin Kolb.

Kolb was no better in what would become an eventual 36-7 loss, sparking debate about head coach Andy Reid's decision and the future of the team's quarterback spot for the rest of this year and beyond.

Kolb made an appearance late in the game but, to the fans delight, it was due to a handy fourth-quarter lead. A stingy defense also contributed to the lopsided affair with three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

The Eagles, who travel to New York for a divisional bout with the Giants next Sunday, are still in serious jeopardy of missing the playoffs as they remain in last place in a crowded NFC East despite the win.

"We need this game to be our springboard. We can't lose anymore," Westbrook said. "We are at that point where we have to man up. We have the team that can do it. Hopefully it puts us right on to what we need to do."

Kurt Warner struggled early and often, throwing two of his three interceptions on the first two offensive series before righting the ship with three TD passes on 21-of-39 attempts for 235 yards.

Larry Fitzgerald caught two TDs and Steve Breaston hauled in the other while the ground game managed just 25 yards for Arizona (7-5), which failed in its second attempt to wrap up the club's first division title since 1975, having also dropped last Sunday's battle with the NFC East-leading New York Giants, 37-29.

The Cardinals have made the postseason just once since the organization shifted its base of operation to the southwest in 1988 and have never topped the NFC West in its six previous years of existence. However, Arizona hosts a 2-9 St. Louis Rams squad next Sunday and still holds a healthy lead in the division with San Francisco (3-8) a distant second.

Philadelphia got off to a rousing start, taking its first drive 70 yards for a score. McNabb went 5-for-5 for 38 yards including a five-yard shovel pass to Westbrook that resulted in a 7-0 game.

Warner was then picked off on Arizona's fifth play from scrimmage by Joselio Hanson, giving the Eagles a 1st-and-10 from the Cardinals' 41-yard line. Two Westbrook runs and a unnecessary roughness penalty on Antrel Rolle put Philadelphia at the one where Westbrook bowled over Rolle at the goal-line, adding insult to injury, for a 14-0 game with 3 1/2 minutes to play in the first.

Three plays later Warner was intercepted for a second time on a tipped ball by wideout Jerheme Urban, and Quintin Mikell returned it 12 yards to the Arizona 44.

The Cardinals were able to stop the Eagles this time but were forced to punt themselves, going three-and-out.

Philadelphia used a relatively short field to go 60 yards and took a 21-0 lead on a two-yard toss to Westbrook on 3rd-and-2. McNabb again was sharp on the drive, completing all four of his passes for 38 yards including throws of 20 and 14 yards to Hank Baskett and DeSean Jackson, respectively.

The normally potent Arizona offense finally got on track on the ensuing possession, with Warner guiding the visitors on an 81-yard scoring drive. Tim Hightower took a short pass in the right flat on 3rd-and-2 and took it 26 yards up the right sideline to gain Eagles territory. Then on 3rd-and-1 from the Philadelphia one-yard-line, Hanson was called for defensive holding, giving the Cardinals a fresh set of downs, on which Warner fired a bullet to Fitzgerald on a quick slant to breach the scoreboard with just under three minutes left to play before halftime.

The Eagles, though, continued to move the ball with ease and put David Akers in position to kick a 42-yard field goal with the clock showing one second to produce a 24-7 lead at the break.

"Anytime that you can get that mix going -- between the run and the pass -- that's important and makes the defense have to play both and honor both. That helps you as an offense," Reid said.

The Cardinals' offense started sour in the second half as well, resulting in three-and-outs on their first two possessions. Philadelphia seized the moment, taking a 31-7 lead with a 68-yard scoring drive -- and Westbrook did the damage again -- scooting through a gaping hole on the left side for a nine- yard TD with a little over six minutes left in the third.

Arizona went three-and-out yet again but Jackson botched the punt by diving for a loose ball when he thought the pigskin had glanced off one of his teammates. The Cardinals needed just four plays and Warner tossed a six- yard score to Breaston. Arizona went for the two-point conversion and Hanson deflected the pass from Warner but Sheldon Brown was called for hands to the face. Brown, though, knocked down the second try.

McNabb tossed consecutive 25-yard completions to L.J. Smith and Kevin Curtis, respectively, as the Eagles easily gained Arizona territory and Akers booted a 41-yard filed goal to push the lead to 34-13.

Warner, though, showed he could move the ball quickly too and used a 27-yard pass to Anquan Boldin and a 40-yarder to Fitzgerald to reach the seven-yard- line, where Fitzgerald hauled in his second TD pass to cut the deficit to 34-20 just 45 seconds into the final quarter.

However, Arizona's next possession proved fatal as Warner hit Boldin, who earlier dropped a sure TD pass, and the wideout was stripped of the ball at his own 19. Five plays later, the Eagles grabbed a 41-20 lead with a five-yard TD catch from Jackson.

McNabb and company posted another score just outside of five minutes remaining when Jason Avant hauled in an eight-yard TD to put the game away for good.
