Police Officer Hit Directing Traffic Dies
Driver Could Face Charges

BOSTON -- A part-time Duxbury, Mass., police officer who was hit by a car while directing traffic earlier this month has died, the police department said. Auxiliary Officer Mel Dyer, 67, was on duty outside the Marshfield Fair 10 days ago when he was hit, Chief Mark DeLuca said on the department's Web site. Dyer was hit about 10 p.m. while directing traffic Aug. 16 at the intersection of Main and South River streets.Witnesses said Dyer had ordered traffic to halt when a car failed to stop and ran into him. Dyer was a a former Plymouth County deputy sheriff who recently signed on as an auxiliary officer. He was working a paid detail when he was hit. The driver who allegedly hit Dyer, a Marshfield, Mass., woman in her 20s identified by police as Kristen Wusteney could face charges, including motor vehicle homicide. Police said at the time there was no indication she was impaired.
