California Dune Collapse Kills Boy

Memorial Grows On Santa Cruz Beach

POSTED: 11:16 am EDT October 13, 2008

Investigators are trying to make sense out of what led to the death of an 11-year-old boy after a sand dune collapsed on him and killed him late Saturday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Three boys were trapped under the dune after they had been digging there, witnesses told the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper. Two of the boys, ages 9 and 10 years old, escaped being buried, but the third did not.

One volunteer rescuer said more than a dozen beach visitors joined together to try and free the boy as his father held the child's hand at Natural Bridges State Beach.

State parks officials have not released the boy's name because he is a juvenile.

By late Sunday, a makeshift memorial was growing near the site of the boy's death.
