Kids 'Sleep Tight' After Convertible Crib Recall

Parents Say They're Frustrated With Voucher Program

Mya Cunningham has been sleeping in her Pack-N-Play since June because her convertible crib was recalled by the manufacturer.

Jardine Baby acknowledged there were "42 incidents of crib slats and spindles breaking" and "four children became entrapped in the space" created by the gaps. The company voluntarily recalled about 320,000 cribs.

"I was under the impression they were being proactive in saying we're recalling these cribs because they're dangerous and we'll provide you with compensation to replace them," said Mya's mother, Stefania Cunningham. "But that's not what we got."

What Cunningham said she got was insulted. After dismantling the crib as told and paying to ship it back to the manufacturer, it was a month before she got a response. And then, it was in the form of a voucher for $274.25 --- LESS than she paid, and good only at Babies R Us.

"There's nothing in the store quality-wise or style-wise even close to $275," Cunningham said. "Their answer was call Jardine, and Jardine's answer was very clear. This is what we sent you and that's all we're doing."

Tina Higgins is another unhappy mom, also frustrated because she couldn't find another Jardine crib she liked or wanted, and no one would help.

"I said, well what is my daughter supposed to do for two weeks without a crib?" Higgins said. "They should have, from the beginning, just said, here's your money back. We're sorry. Go get another crib. Obviously your child needs a crib."

Jardine never answered WCVB-TV's questions, but Toys R Us sent a statement offering to work with unhappy customers to meet their individual needs, and maintain a special hotline and Web site for complaints.

But it's too little, too late for moms like Tina Higgins.

"I think they should have handled it better," she said.

Toys R Us offered a gift certificate to Higgins and promised to help Cunningham find a convertible crib she likes.
