11 Tips To Feed Your Family On $100 A Week

    1. Buy only real food like lettuce, carrots, milk, and chicken. These are essential ingredients that have not been cooked by a company.

    2. Reduce the number of paper products you buy. Use real dishes, silverware and cloth kitchen towels instead of paper towels.

    3. Minimize the use of convenience foods and make meals yourself. Forget packaged mixes.

    4. Buy essential food in bulk, such as pasta, rice, or olive oil.

    5. Do not drink up your food budget. Avoid buying drinks like soda, coffee, bottled water or expensive sports drinks.

    6. Buy store brands instead of name brands. Generics, or “private labels” as they are now known, are almost always less expensive and are often the same quality as name-brand products. Many times, in fact, the name-brand companies make the private label products.

    7. Pay for the food, not the packaging. It is often less expensive to buy the base ingredient of a food than the packaged item. Try a bag of popcorn kernels instead of microwave popcorn, or buy spaghetti sauce in a can instead of a jar to save about 50 percent.

    8. Watch prices and price tags carefully. Keep your eyes peeled for sales. Also, make sure sales are actually a good deal.

    9. Clip newspaper coupons and find more coupons online. Chain grocery stores often post their sales and coupons on the internet. Find the grocery store nearest you that offers double coupons.

    10. Find a grocery store with consistent prices.

    11. Add fillers such as pasta, rice, oatmeal, or dumplings to make your recipes stretch.
