Metrowest Contractor Hit With State Lawsuit

Attorney General's Action Follows Team 5 Investigation

POSTED: 4:55 pm EST November 19, 2007

The Massachusetts Attorney General's office filed suit Monday against home improvement contractor Dino DiStefano, accusing him of cheating nearly two dozen homeowners out of $145,000.

According to the lawsuit, DiStefano allegedly took the money for projects he never finished and, in some case, never even started. He also sometimes used a fake name -- Tom Longo -- to get jobs, like a $35,000 renovation in a Boston neighborhood.

"I trusted him," said Mike Horner, the homeowner. "I trusted him like a sucker."

Team 5 Investigates Susan Wornick confronted DiStefano last November when he appeared in court for a different case.

"There are a lot of people who claim you took tens of thousands of dollars from them," Wornick said.

"I have no comment," DiStefano said.

"Do you want to say anything to those people?" Wornick asked.

"I have no comment," DiStefano responded.

The Attorney General's office already negotiated a settlement with one of DiStefano's business partners and with Bank of America, which cashed checks made out to the alias.

DiStefano is currently on probation following a larceny conviction last June in Middlesex County criminal court.
