BOSTON -- A well-known plastic surgeon has been fired by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the hospital said in a statement.

Dr. Loren J. Borud, 44, was fired Friday. The Board of Registration in Medicine, which investigates complaints against doctors, has been notified, the hospital told the Boston Herald.

The Herald reported Borud was fired after what the hospital described as an “impairment” issue during surgery.

Borud was suspended following a June 27 incident, according to Kenneth Sands, the hospital’s senior vice president of health care quality.

Borud “is no longer conducting surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and his employment has been terminated,” Sands said.

The Herald reported that he did not specify the nature of Borud’s “impairment.”

Borud’s slogan on his Web site is “Creating a new you.”

According to the site, Borud is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a full-time faculty member at Harvard Medical School.

The site says Borud “has written over 25 peer-reviewed articles in plastic surgery journals, 6 book chapters, and has spoken widely at local, national, and international plastic surgery meetings.”

The Boston Herald cites anonymous sources who say Beth Israel disciplined Borud twice in the last seven years. According to records on the Board of Registration Web site, “Borud has no record of hospital discipline in the past ten years.” There is also no record of malpractice claims or criminal conviction.

His attorney, Bruce Singal, declined to comment.
