United Way: Improving Quality Of Life For Families

POSTED: 12:25 pm EDT September 17, 2007
UPDATED: 12:00 pm EDT April 16, 2008

United Way merges effective partners, wise investments, and committed volunteers to improve people's quality of life. We strategically tackle the most critical issues to create measurable differences in our region. We know that the way to make our region the best place for children in the country is to both strengthen the financial stability of their parents and ensure that kids get the nurturing support and educational opportunities that will prepare them for adulthood.

Together, we can improve our quality of life.

Our Impact Areas:
  • Healthy Child Development: Children are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed when they enter school.
  • Increasing Youth Opportunities: Teenagers graduate high school with positive options for the future.
  • Affordable Housing: Families have increased economic independence and access to safe, affordable housing.
  • Sustainable Employment: Parents have jobs that can support their families and the skills to move up the economic ladder.
  • Our work is made possible through the work of our volunteers, partnerships with government, business, education, labor, faith groups, non-profit organizations and committed citizens like you.

United Way creates measurable impact through strategic investments in long-term solutions.

Here are a few examples of your investment in action.

    Child Impact
One-third of Massachusetts children are exposed to risk factors* that threaten their development and subsequent success in school

United Way served more than 22,000 young children through our partner agencies that provide early care and education, early intervention and family support programs that help ensure children are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed when they enter school.

    Youth Impact
While we know that a relationship with a caring adult is the most important factor in a youth’s success in school, there are more than 4,500 Massachusetts’ youth on a wait list to be matched with a mentor.

United Way serves more than 90,000 youths through our partner agencies who provide the academic enrichment, leadership development, mentoring and career exploration that put teenagers on the road to opportunity.

    Housing Impact
An estimated 20,000 Massachusetts children and 10,000 families experience homelessness.3

United Way prevented homelessness for more than 15,000 at-risk individuals through affordable housing services and ended homelessness for 5,000 people through placement and support.

We invested nearly $40 million in 2007. Through our partner agencies, we delivered services to over 2 million adults and children in our region.

The Better Business Bureau recommends that operating expenses not exceed 35 percent of an organization’s overall budget. We at United Way are proud of our ability to maximize your contribution by operating efficiently and effectively at 17 percent.
